Orioles’ dramatic improvement one of MLB’s big surprises
One thing I love about sports is its unpredictability. Every year, there are teams that surprise us, and in 2022, one of baseball’s great stories is the Baltimore Orioles.
Right now, the O’s are just outside the playoff picture. But even if they don’t make the postseason, their improvement is remarkable.
Going into 2022, I’m sure baseball analysts expected the Orioles to start getting better after years of bottom dwelling. After all, their farm system is flush with several outstanding prospects.
The way the O’s have played, though, since Adley Rutschman’s call up is incredible. The catcher, considered the top overall prospect in baseball, has performed as advertised. Rutschman looks like a foundational player for the next 10 years, kind of like Buster Posey was with the Giants.
And there’s more. The Orioles currently own two of the top four prospects as well, according to MLB.com, in shortstop/third baseman Gunnar Henderson and right hander Grayson Rodriguez.
Both are expected to arrive in the majors next year. The front office also said it plans to be aggressive in the free-agent market this coming offseason.
So I don’t think this 2022 success is a mirage – the O’s are here to stay.
